History of TrueNorth Church

In 2002, Steve Davis felt a calling from the Lord to start a church plant for the unchurched in North Augusta, South Carolina. At the time, he was serving as Minister of Married Adults at a local Baptist church. The vision for the new church began developing in his mind, but the financial uncertainty of providing for his wife, Cheryl, and their four children was also an issue. Those prayers were answered when the church he was serving at offered to extend his full-time pay for six months while the church plant was being developed. Also during this time, Cedar Creek Church in Aiken, South Carolina became Steve's sponsor church. Pastor Richard Swift, his staff, and congregation believed in Steve's vision and provided guidance and financial assistance to get the church started.

Nine families stepped out in faith to help start the new church. The vision for the church became more apparent as the group traveled to five churches in South Carolina and Georgia during February 2004. It was agreed that the church would be contemporary in style, upbeat in music, casual and friendly in atmosphere, and relevant in message in order to appeal to the unchurched and non-Christians.

TrueNorth Church was now becoming a reality. In the early days, Steve assumed that the church would meet in his home until enough families jumped onboard. But with nine families committed and others interested, a facility to accommodate the group had to be found. Enter Rose Marshall, Principal at Hammond Hill Elementary School. Being a member of Cedar Creek Church, Rose knew of the need for building space and offered the use of the school cafeteria.

Sunday, March 5, 2004 was the first service for TrueNorth Church with fifty attenders. The next five months consisted of services designed to develop the core group and the strategy and structure of the church. The mission of the church became "to turn spiritual seekers into passionate followers of Christ." Every ministry of TrueNorth Church would be built upon this purpose.

By the summer, over 100 people were in attendance and the search for another facility was underway. North Augusta High School became the church's second location. With a 480 seat auditorium for worship and a gymnasium for the children's ministry, the location has been a tremendous blessing to the growth of TrueNorth Church.

Today, over 1100 people attend TrueNorth Church each Sunday morning during two worship services! God continues to bless TrueNorth Church!

When asked to explain the huge growth of TrueNorth Church, Pastor Steve Davis says, "I can't explain it. It's a God thing. He has built His church through a committed group of people who see a need for lives being changed in this community."

Come experience the difference at one of our two identical services, Sundays at 9:30 AM and 11:11 AM!
